Top Family Holiday Destinations for 2026

Whether you are looking to return to old places and experience them in new ways or be introduced to new destinations we help you to look beyond the ordinary when planning your itinerary.

It is our preference to work with smaller boutique owner-run properties as we think this gives you a much more authentic experience and no shortage of quality. It is these properties that often get booked in advance so planning ahead is key.

Where will you be travelling?

Here we share some of the destinations that we think are going to be big in 2026.

Costa Rica

Costa Rica has long been a popular destination for family holidays. It is not hard to see why, with wildlife encounters, jungle trails and a focus on outdoor activities it is perfect for children of all ages. The Costa Rican phrase Pura Vida or ‘Pure life’ celebrates the simpler things in life and this is something that you will experience throughout your trip as you embrace the natural environment.

Costa Rica is the great pioneer of eco - tourism and has it all. Unique volcanic and jungle landscapes; exquisite tropical beaches; bustling historic towns and an almost limitless range of adventurous activities, so it is like a real life geography lesson.

With more direct flights from the UK to both Guanacaste and San Jose for 2025 it is easier to reach. Or, the indirect flight might be your preference as they offer more flexibility for dates and times enabling you to better fit them around your family.

Here we share some of our favourite things to experience in the country with young children.

Kazakhstan

Kazakhstan is increasingly gaining attention as an emerging family travel destination thanks to its vast and varied landscapes, rich cultural heritage and a growing range of experiences that appeal to both adults and children. From the dramatic rock formations and emerald lakes of Burabay National Park, often called the “Kazakh Switzerland” for its pine forests, lakes and gentle walking paths; to the sweeping canyons of Charyn National Park and the alpine scenery near Kolsai Lakes, the country offers plenty of outdoor adventure and nature‑focused activities that families can enjoy together. In cities such as Astana, modern attractions like the Baiterek Tower observation platform offer panoramic views and easy urban exploration, while family‑friendly zoos and cultural centres provide relaxed options for days off the road.

Access from the UK is becoming simpler, with direct flights to Almaty available from London that take around eight hours, making it feasible to reach Kazakhstan without lengthy connections and giving families more time to explore once there. While direct flights to the capital Astana may still involve a stopover, a range of airlines offer connections that get you into the heart of the country for onward travel. Once on the ground, the combination of scenic rail and road connections makes it possible to combine city stays, nature parks and cultural sites into one rewarding itinerary.

Visa‑free travel for up to 30 days for British nationals also helps simplify planning, as well as offering flexibility in how long families can stay and explore. With unique landscapes, opportunities for outdoor exploration, welcoming hospitality and easier travel logistics in 2026, Kazakhstan is shaping up as an exciting addition to family travel itineraries beyond the more usual destinations.

Iceland

The Northern Lights are high on the ‘bucket list’ for most families. Your family holiday to Iceland offers this and many other unique experiences. From volcanoes, geysers, lava flows, lakes and waterfalls to whale watching and the chance to ride a skidoo.

The choice of accommodation is varied, from staying in the tiny but nonetheless welcoming, and interesting Viking city of Reykjavik and it’s great family friendly hotels, to more remote properties with the opportunity to stargaze.

For families that are looking for flexibility you can easily explore this amazing country on your own or with a private guide. Allowing you to do things at your own pace. With more flights from the UK to Northern Iceland if you have already been to Reykjavik and the Golden Circle, maybe now there is an opportunity to explore the country in a new way. Accessibility from the UK is convenient, with direct flights to Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Durban taking around 11–12 hours. Egypt

Egypt offers a truly unforgettable family holiday, combining ancient wonders, vibrant cities, and unique desert landscapes. In 2026, there are exciting new experiences that make it an especially good time to visit. The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM), officially opened in November 2025, is now welcoming visitors and features thousands of artefacts, including the most complete display of Tutankhamun’s treasures ever assembled.

Luxury Nile cruising is also expanding, with intimate dahabiya-style sailings on boats such as the Oberoi Melouk and Oberoi Malekat, and the Waldorf Astoria Nile River Experience set to launch later in 2026. These new itineraries offer families a relaxed way to explore the Nile, combining stunning scenery with comfort and modern amenities.

Beyond the Nile, Egypt’s landscapes continue to surprise. The Siwa Oasis is emerging as a striking new destination, with luxury stays in development around 2026 that will allow families to experience serene desert scenery, traditional culture, and outdoor adventure away from the well-trodden tourist routes.

From the pyramids of Giza and the temples of Luxor to wildlife-filled desert excursions and stargazing in the Sinai, Egypt now combines classic highlights with fresh, family-friendly experiences. With upgraded hotels, private tours, and exclusive experiences such as out-of-hours museum access or family dinners at iconic sites, it’s easier than ever to design a holiday that balances education, adventure, and relaxation for every member of the family.

Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia is fast becoming a must-see destination for families looking for unique and unforgettable travel experiences. Beyond its world-renowned historical sites and desert adventures, the Kingdom now offers incredible coastal escapes where families can camp under starry desert skies, explore ancient ruins, and discover vibrant local culture through expert guided tours — all with a level of comfort that makes travelling with children easier than many expect. Meanwhile, a wave of luxury coastal developments is expanding the options for family holidays in spectacular natural settings.

At the heart of this transformation is Shura Island, the new hub of The Red Sea destination, where a collection of world-class resorts is opening through 2025 and into 2026. These include properties from globally trusted brands, many with family-focused amenities. The Four Seasons Resort at The Red Sea, The Red Sea EDITION and InterContinental The Red Sea Resort all blend luxury with natural beauty.

Just down the coast, the AMAALA destination is emerging as a wellness and luxury seaside escape that also delivers for families. Its first phase includes multiple resorts and experiences built around pristine coastline and marine life exploration, with a strong environmental mission to enhance local mangroves and ecosystems. This is perfect for families who want to combine relaxation with outdoor adventure.

With these developments, plus easy access via Red Sea International Airport and growing infrastructure for tourists, Saudi Arabia is no longer just an emerging destination — it’s a compelling option for family travellers seeking something fresh, comfortable, and filled with discovery. Whether you’re unwinding on family-friendly beaches, splashing through coral gardens, or learning together about ancient cultures inland, the Kingdom is shaping up to be a truly memorable place to explore together in 2026 and beyond.

Sri Lanka

A family holiday to Sri Lanka offers a mix of adventure, culture, and relaxation, with opportunities to explore national parks, beaches, and hill country at a pace that suits all ages. Its natural diversity and welcoming atmosphere make it a rewarding destination for families who enjoy both outdoor activities and time to unwind.

In 2026, there are a few new and recently refreshed hotels across the island that provide additional options for family stays. In Colombo, boutique properties such as Ratnam Residence offer a calm, convenient city base, while refreshed beach resorts in Bentota and Mirissa, lodges near Yala National Park, and retreats in Ella and Nuwara Eliya provide a variety of settings for families combining relaxation with nature or cultural exploration. Many of these hotels are boutique or smaller in scale, so planning ahead helps ensure the best choice for your itinerary.

Combined with improved transport links and seasonal updates to popular attractions, 2026 is a year that offers more options and smoother travel for families. Whether you want to focus on wildlife, beaches, or hill country escapes, there are now more places to stay comfortably and conveniently, making it easier to design a well-rounded family itinerary.

Japan

Japan makes for a truly rewarding family holiday, with its distinct culture, striking landscapes, and futuristic cities offering experiences that delight every generation. 2026 is an especially exciting year for families, as new hotels and travel experiences are opening across the country, providing even more options for comfortable and memorable stays. Many of Japan’s best hotels and ryokans remain boutique in style with limited availability, particularly those suitable for families, so booking early is recommended to secure the most convenient options for your trip.

Among the newest openings in 2026 are several properties that enhance the range of family-friendly bases across Japan. In Kyoto, Capella Kyoto and a restored Imperial Hotel Kyoto provide stylish, well-located options for families keen to explore. In Yokohama, OMO5 Yokohama Bashamichi (opening January 2026) and OMO7 Yokohama (opening April 2026) sit in the heart of the city with easy access to bayside parks, museums, and family-friendly waterfront attractions.

Elsewhere, KAI Kusatsu in the Kusatsu onsen area is opening in spring 2026, bringing relaxed hot-spring culture within easy reach for those who enjoy a quieter, nature-focused pace. Plans for Hotel The Mitsui Hakone, opening later in 2026 within the Fuji‑Hakone‑Izu National Park, add another option for families looking to combine city exploration with outdoor activities and gentle immersion in Japan’s scenic countryside.

These openings expand the variety of family-friendly accommodation options, from city stays and cultural experiences to mountain retreats and seaside escapes making multi-destination itineraries without long, tiring transfers. Improvements in rail connectivity also allow families to thread together Tokyo, Kyoto, Yokohama, the Japanese Alps, and island regions with minimal travel stress, keeping journeys comfortable for children and adults alike.

Using our first-hand knowledge and understanding of your preferences, we design trips that perfectly match your family’s interests, incorporating the best festivals, activities, and regions for the time of year you plan to travel. Oman

Oman has long been appreciated as a family‑friendly destination that offers a welcome contrast to its neighbours in the Gulf, with a focus on authentic culture, natural scenery and relaxed hospitality rather than neon‑lit skyscrapers. The Sultanate’s landscape is strikingly varied — from dramatic canyon mountains and golden dunes to calm beaches and bustling souqs — giving families plenty to explore together. For history and hands‑on learning, places like the Royal Opera House in Muscat and the Oman Children’s Museum provide engaging, educational experiences in the capital, while coastal areas offer dolphin‑spotting boat trips and turtle‑nesting excursions.

We’ve teamed up with Claire from Oman Wanderlust and Tinbox Traveller to bring you a new itinerary highlighting her favourite experiences from living in Oman with her family for 2½ years.

From the UK, direct flights to Muscat make Oman easily accessible with typical flight times around seven hours, helping keep connections simple for families and enabling a comfortable pace of travel between desert, mountain and coast. With its combination of cultural richness, scenic diversity, and a growing range of family‑suited stays, Oman offers a warm welcome and plenty of memorable experiences for family holidays in 2026.
